About me

Julia Mayer (2003, Barcelona) discovered photography as a child, experimenting with an analogue camera that opened up a whole new way of seeing. She turned her parents’ bathroom into a makeshift darkroom, and that’s where her passion for photography really began. From then on, photography changed the way she looked at the world, teaching her to slow down, pay attention, and turn what she saw into images.

She studied Fine Arts at the Universitat de Barcelona, a period that shaped her as an artist. It was halfway through her degree that she discovered documentary photography, and something clicked. She realised the camera could be more than just an artistic tool—it could be a way of engaging with the world, of observing it with care and commitment. Her final degree project won the award “PATRIM” for best final degree project, and her thesis can now be found in the university’s institutional repository. The work was also exhibited at Fundacion Vila Casas at the Can Framis Museum, giving it a life beyond university.

She went on to complete a Master’s degree in Documentary Cinema, which pushed her practice further into filmmaking while deepening her connection to documentary storytelling. This experience gave her more tools to work with, letting her move naturally between photography and film while staying true to the same careful, observant approach that has always guided her.
